British Prime Minister Andy Burnham spoke by telephone on Monday with US President Donald Trump, with the two leaders agreeing that efforts to achieve a ceasefire and end Russia’s war in Ukraine must continue, Downing Street said.

A spokesperson for Mr Burnham said that the British prime minister had reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s support for Ukraine, as well as for the recent peace negotiations launched at the initiative of the United States.

The two leaders also discussed the situation in the Middle East. Mr Burnham stressed the importance of a two-state solution, the opening of the Strait of Hormuz and ensuring that Iran never acquires a nuclear weapon.

On Sunday, Washington’s special envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv. The meeting came a day after they held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
