An international educational architecture workshop by the Architectural Association (AA) of London was held for the first time at Neapolis University Pafos from 24 August to 3 September.
Titled “Fragments in Equilibrium”, the workshop was organised במסגרת the university’s collaboration with the Architectural Association and brought students and tutors together for an intensive process of research and design.
It focused on the relationship between architecture, the landscape and Cyprus’s cultural heritage, with the abandoned village of Foinikas as its main subject of study.
Through field research, photogrammetric surveying, digital modelling and collective design, participants examined the relationship between existing architectural elements, the natural landscape and the needs of a contemporary community.
They also explored ways of reusing architectural remains within the framework of contemporary spatial and social design.
The workshop concluded with the presentation of the final proposals for Foinikas, the development and presentation of a 1:1 scale prototype, and a final critical presentation and discussion with the participation of the review panel.
The process connected research and design with practical construction and the evaluation of the proposals, examining the potential for architectural remains to be linked to new uses while preserving a place’s memory and responding to its contemporary needs.
“Fragments in Equilibrium” was initiated by Danae Polyviou, a lecturer at the Architectural Association London and director of formDP Engineering.
