The Trilateral Summit of Cyprus, Greece and Egypt is being held today in El Alamein, with the participation of President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
The summit will begin at 1 p.m. and, after its conclusion, the three leaders will make statements to the media.
The discussions will focus on critical geopolitical developments in the region, as well as on strengthening trilateral relations. The Mecca agreement, signed on 7 August by Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, is also expected to be discussed.
Before the summit, President Christodoulides will hold a bilateral meeting with his Egyptian counterpart. As part of his visit, and as an honoured guest of President el-Sisi, he will attend the opening ceremony of the El-Alamein International Airshow.
As President Christodoulides had stated, the three countries can, “through a positive approach”, contribute to creating conditions of security and cooperation in a region of particular geostrategic importance.
Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis had said that the Trilateral Summit is taking place at a particularly important juncture for the wider region.
“In light of the wider geopolitical developments, the importance of the stable and longstanding cooperation between Cyprus and Egypt is becoming even more evident, as is the value of close coordination through regional cooperation frameworks, with particular importance attached to the Trilateral Cooperation between Cyprus, Greece and Egypt,” he noted.
He added that the trilateral framework has been established as an important mechanism for regional coordination and cooperation, making use of the geographical position of the three countries, Cyprus and Greece’s membership of the European Union, and Egypt’s particularly important role in the Arab world and the wider region.
Regarding Cyprus-Egypt relations, Mr Letymbiotis said they are rooted in longstanding historical and political ties and have expanded and deepened significantly in recent years, having been institutionally upgraded to the level of a Strategic Partnership.
The cooperation between the two countries, he added, extends across a broad range of sectors, with particular emphasis on energy, security, the economy, and close political and diplomatic coordination on regional and international developments.
President Christodoulides will be accompanied by Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos, the Government Spokesperson and government officials.
